Weddings are a treasured moment when two people pledge a lifetime commitment to each other.  They are also a huge industry, with dresses, and tuxes, and wedding gifts galore.  Planning has become another large part of the industry – and you may be asking yourself:  Is a wedding planning career right for me??

Well – let’s figure on a few things:  First, discuss just what wedding planners do.  Although it’s referred to as a wedding planning career, there are actually three different terms to be familiar with.  A wedding planner is handed full control of coordinating the details of a couple’s nuptials. Planners do most of the work, with the bride and groom making input, yet leaving things in the planner’s capable and trusted hands.  A consultant is very much an assistant, available when needed.  In this case, the couple is running the show – while you step in and offer whatever tips and advice the lovebirds need.  Wedding directors are in charge of the wedding day itself.  They sweat the big and small stuff, allowing the happy couple to enjoy becoming happy newlyweds.

If you determine that a wedding planning career is the path for you, then you should consider the various options for career opportunities.  Some people simply wish to assist friends and family in creating a fantastic wedding.  These individuals see this as a hobby as much as a profession (though you might still charge just a little bit of money, if it’s not impolite).  Others do seek more of a wedding planning career, doing so by seeking employment with a hotel, resort, or planning outfit.  Jobs in the profession are growing more plentiful, though it can still be a tough process securing one.  Then, there are the brave souls who venture into the world of going into business for themselves.  These people are the ones who comprise the majority of wedding planning career professionals.

Those who embark on a wedding planning career need to be the type of people who can readily organize large tasks, as well as successfully multi-task.  You must be able to present yourself in a reasoned, calm, diplomatic mode regarding the bride.  You want to give suggestions and steer her in the right directions – but you surely don’t want to insult or offend your client.  Be sure you can direct her away from potentially poor suggestions, in favor of something else she might be willing to try.  You better be ready to take on loads of stress in a wedding planning career environment.  You have many people you have to smoothly direct and manage in planning a wedding – including vendors, caterers, the bridal party and groomsmen, and florists, to mention a few.
